How to give agency access to Google Ads

Last updated: August 2026

How to give agency access to Google Ads: use Google Ads manager account (MCC) linking — your manager account is linked to the client's account through Google's own access process. Open Tools → Setup → Access and security → Managers, add the agency, choose the access level, and confirm. You never share a password and can remove access anytime.

Before you start

Have these ready — it's what onboarding stalls on:

Step-by-step

  1. Ask your agency for their 10-digit Google Ads manager (MCC) ID.
  2. In Google Ads, go to Admin → Access and security.
  3. Open the Managers tab.
  4. Enter the agency's manager account ID and choose the access level.
  5. Send the request — the agency accepts from their MCC.
Where 90% of onboardings fail: Onboarding stalls on the 10-digit ID hunt and clients accepting the manager request in the wrong menu. One link removes the hunt.

Which access level to grant

Grant the minimum the work needs. On Google Ads, the levels are:

Access level / roleWhat it can do
AdminFull control including users and billing. Grant sparingly.
StandardManage campaigns and see reports; can't manage users. The usual level for a media agency.
Read onlyView campaigns and reports, no edits. Good for auditors.
BillingAccess to billing and payments only.
Email onlyReceives reports/notifications, no account access.

How long it takes, and who does what

Under 5 minutes. You send or accept a manager-account link; the agency confirms from their MCC. Linking is usually instant once both sides confirm.

What you (the client) do

Open Tools → Setup → Access and security → Managers and grant the access — a few minutes.

What the agency does

Accept and confirm from their side, then start work.

How to check it worked

Access is granted when:

If it doesn't work

The most common problems and how to fix them:

“Manager request pending”

Someone must accept the link. If the agency sent the request, accept it in Admin → Access and security → Managers. If you sent it, the agency accepts in their MCC.

“Wrong customer ID”

You entered an ad-account ID, not a manager (MCC) ID, or transposed digits. Confirm the 10-digit MCC ID with the agency.

Can't grant the level you want

You need Admin on the account to manage access. If you only have Standard, ask whoever set up the account to grant it or add the agency.

Why you don't share a password

Manager (MCC) linking is Google's official agency method — no password shared. You keep ownership of the account and can terminate the link anytime from Access and security. The client's login and 2FA are never involved.

The faster way: one link

Everything above is why agencies switch to a single link. HandItSafe requests exactly this Google Ads access for you — the client approves through Google Ads's official process in about three minutes, no password shared, and keeps a panel to remove it anytime. When the engagement ends, removing access is one tap with a full log.

FAQ

Giving Google Ads access — questions

Is manager (MCC) access the same as sharing my login?

No. MCC linking is Google's official way to let an agency manage your account without your password. You keep ownership and can unlink anytime.

What access level should I grant an agency?

Admin lets them manage campaigns and billing settings; Standard lets them manage campaigns without billing. Grant the minimum they need.

How do I remove a Google Ads agency later?

Admin → Access and security → Managers → Remove. HandItSafe also gives your client a one-tap remove and a log of when access started.

What's the difference between MCC linking and adding a user by email?

MCC linking connects the agency's whole manager account (best for agencies managing many clients). Adding a user by email grants one person access. For agencies, MCC linking is cleaner and scales.

Will linking give the agency my billing details?

Only if you grant Admin or Billing access. Grant Standard and they manage campaigns without seeing payment methods.
