What is access debt?

Last updated: August 2026

Access debt is the accumulation of stale, forgotten access an agency (or its former staff and vendors) still holds to client accounts long after it's needed — the “ghost admins” haunting a Business Manager years later.

Why it matters for agencies

It's a real security and compliance liability. Clean offboarding with an access log — a core HandItSafe feature — is how agencies avoid it.

The short version

If you're an agency or a client trying to get set up quickly: access debt is the accumulation of stale, forgotten access an agency (or its former staff and vendors) still holds to client accounts long after it's needed — the “ghost admins” haunting a Business Manager years later. The practical takeaway is that you should never need to share a password to make this work — every major platform has an official way to grant access, and it can always be removed later.

Related to HandItSafe: HandItSafe uses exactly these official access methods, then adds a control panel so the client can see and remove access anytime — and a log of who had access and when.
